I really enjoyed this。 I read the Target edition with the cool alternate cover。 I cannot find it here。 That aside, I loved the story。 Syl Yarrow is a hauler who's mother was killed by the nefarious Nahil space pirates。 Syl joins forces with with Master Jedi Vernestra Rwoh, her Padawan Imri, and Master Cohmac and his Padawan Reath Silas as they go on a mission to resolve a galactic family dispute。 The plot thickens with the involvement of "The Orical" who has access to the Galaxy that no one else I really enjoyed this。 I read the Target edition with the cool alternate cover。 I cannot find it here。 That aside, I loved the story。 Syl Yarrow is a hauler who's mother was killed by the nefarious Nahil space pirates。 Syl joins forces with with Master Jedi Vernestra Rwoh, her Padawan Imri, and Master Cohmac and his Padawan Reath Silas as they go on a mission to resolve a galactic family dispute。 The plot thickens with the involvement of "The Orical" who has access to the Galaxy that no one else has。。。 The Nahil want it, The wealthy Graf family want it, their rivals The San Tekka's want it, and the Jedi? They are about to get caught in the middle。 Let the Galactic Adventure and intrigue begin。。。in a galaxy far, far away! 。。。more

Nope, not for me, this was bad。I was expecting to like this solely because of the two Jedi on the cover, but i didn't happend。 The plot interesting for what it means for the High Republic era as a whole, but it was slow and boring almost throughout the whole story。 The problem with character driven stories is that if you don't like the characters, it becomes super boring and dull (at least that's what happened to me)。 And i started to "enjoy" this book after the 30th chapter (out of 41), that's Nope, not for me, this was bad。I was expecting to like this solely because of the two Jedi on the cover, but i didn't happend。 The plot interesting for what it means for the High Republic era as a whole, but it was slow and boring almost throughout the whole story。 The problem with character driven stories is that if you don't like the characters, it becomes super boring and dull (at least that's what happened to me)。 And i started to "enjoy" this book after the 30th chapter (out of 41), that's not good。The only intriguing characters for me were the Jedi (and even they were kinda annoying some of the time)。 Sylvestri Yarrow is the main character and the worst character。 I did not car about her or her story or her romantic partner, nothing about that whole story arc was likeable。 I liked Cohmac and Reath since their introduction in Into the Dark, but they do nothing for the most part。 Vernestra and Imri and a super interesting duo, an incredibly young Jedi Knight and a young padawan that can't control his abilities。Audiobook narrated by Keylor Leigh: I did not this at all。 The narration felt robotic and emotionless, and all the voices were almost identical。 Also, this is the first Star Wars audiobook i listened that has no music, no sound effects, nothing。 And it was a huge letdown。Overall: It's always nice to have a story (especially in a project like The High Republic) that slows downs a bit and is more "dialogue based"。 But this was boring and bad executed。 With uninteresting characters that were interesting in previous books。 This was disappointing。 。。。more

Out of The Shadows gives us insight into how the events of the Valo fair ripple into other parts of the galaxy。 Syl yarrow is our guide in this story。 Syl succeeds in many levels as the character we follow in this adventure。 Syl not only shines as a diverse character but she also represents many of those that don't have a voice in her galaxy and our own。 Syl has little time to grieve the recent death of her mother before she is dragged out of hyperspace and attacked by the Nihil。 Barely escaping Out of The Shadows gives us insight into how the events of the Valo fair ripple into other parts of the galaxy。 Syl yarrow is our guide in this story。 Syl succeeds in many levels as the character we follow in this adventure。 Syl not only shines as a diverse character but she also represents many of those that don't have a voice in her galaxy and our own。 Syl has little time to grieve the recent death of her mother before she is dragged out of hyperspace and attacked by the Nihil。 Barely escaping with her life Syl goes to Coruscant hoping to get the republic to help。 She instead finds her self involved with the wealthy Graf family and the Jedi order。 Fate also brings her ex-girlfriend into Syl's life and secrets of her mothers past。I really loved this book。 The High Republic team really excels at integrating story arcs from various books 。 Justina takes threads from her own previous HR books as well as all the Phase One books seamlessly into a rich rewarding read for those that have consumed all the HR content along with being welcoming to new readers。 I especially loved seeing Justina's version of Reath and the character growth of both Vernestra and Imri。 。。。more

This book seemed to flesh some things out a little more。 The Nihil is showing themselves to be more of a threat than the Jedi had predicted they would be。 The story is written from different perspectives from both main protagonists and antagonists so we can also be aware of some of their internal struggles。 I'm interested to continue seeing how this story progresses。 This book seemed to flesh some things out a little more。 The Nihil is showing themselves to be more of a threat than the Jedi had predicted they would be。 The story is written from different perspectives from both main protagonists and antagonists so we can also be aware of some of their internal struggles。 I'm interested to continue seeing how this story progresses。 。。。more

So much better than the phase 1 YA novel。 Still some cheesy angstyness, but actually contained a few significant implications for the next phase of the series。

this book is so good!! i love vern very much! i could be speaking through my high republic bias but every single bit of this book is so good! only thing making it 4 stars is sometimes i got confused by all the political-ish stuff, and the book took a while to pick up the pace, but it was still a wonderful read!!!

The weakest High Republic novel so far。 There was very little action and a lot of seeing the same thing from differing perspectives。 I enjoyed how it advances the overarching High Republic narrative, and I'm super interested in the San Tekka v。 Graf family feud and how it will play into the whole hyperspace development, but the story in this just took so long to set up and then ended so fast。 Glad to see the LGBTQ+ rep, but it felt a little forced。 I liked the exploration of Vernestra and Imiri' The weakest High Republic novel so far。 There was very little action and a lot of seeing the same thing from differing perspectives。 I enjoyed how it advances the overarching High Republic narrative, and I'm super interested in the San Tekka v。 Graf family feud and how it will play into the whole hyperspace development, but the story in this just took so long to set up and then ended so fast。 Glad to see the LGBTQ+ rep, but it felt a little forced。 I liked the exploration of Vernestra and Imiri's relationship as Master and Padawan, as well as Vern's development as a Jedi。 。。。more

First of all, Justina Ireland is a good writer。 This much is certain。 The book’s pacing, dialogue, and structure were better than some recent Star Wars novels I’ve read… but I felt like Ireland was forced to write within a “box,” her creativity limited to a committee-style piece。 The book was filled with several interesting ideas (most notably the feuding families, the San Tekkas and the Grafs,) but so much of this novel felt like Disney-pushed ideas shoehorned in: frontier, unnecessary referenc First of all, Justina Ireland is a good writer。 This much is certain。 The book’s pacing, dialogue, and structure were better than some recent Star Wars novels I’ve read… but I felt like Ireland was forced to write within a “box,” her creativity limited to a committee-style piece。 The book was filled with several interesting ideas (most notably the feuding families, the San Tekkas and the Grafs,) but so much of this novel felt like Disney-pushed ideas shoehorned in: frontier, unnecessary references to their own recent movies, and worst of all, prequel hate (a prominent Gungan character was killed off, the I-hate-it attitude towards Coruscant and politics, etc。) I am interested in the High Republic era, but I wish storywriters can take it somewhere new and fresh。 It’s frustrating, because I know the authors, like Ireland, are talented。 。。。more

When I read the 1st batch of Star Wars: The High Republic books (Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi, by Charles Soule; Star Wars: The High Republic: A Test of Courage, by Justina Ireland and Star Wars: The High Republic: Into the Dark, by Claudia Gray) earlier this year, I consistently, consecutively rated them all 4 stars。 But for Phase 2, I've become more varied in my ratings。 I mean, first I rated Star Wars: The High Republic: The Rising Storm, by Cavan Scott 5 stars。 Then I rate When I read the 1st batch of Star Wars: The High Republic books (Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi, by Charles Soule; Star Wars: The High Republic: A Test of Courage, by Justina Ireland and Star Wars: The High Republic: Into the Dark, by Claudia Gray) earlier this year, I consistently, consecutively rated them all 4 stars。 But for Phase 2, I've become more varied in my ratings。 I mean, first I rated Star Wars: The High Republic: The Rising Storm, by Cavan Scott 5 stars。 Then I rated Star Wars: The High Republic: Race to Crashpoint Tower, by Daniel Jose Older 3 stars。 And now I've rated Star Wars: The High Republic: Out of the Shadows, also by Justina Ireland, 4 stars。This book acts as a sequel to both A Test of Courage, and Into the Dark。 Because it features Vernestra Rwoh and her Padawan Imri Cantaros from the former, and Reath Silas, his Master Cohmac Vitus and the Nihil girl Nan from the latter。 I also wanna note that Out of the Shadows is the 4th Star Wars book by Justina Ireland that I've read。 However, the previous 3 were classified as middle-grade books。 This 1 was quite clearly young adult, making it the first book by her that I've read in that genre。 (Yes, I know her Dread Nation series is considered YA, but I haven't read those books。) As such, Out of the Shadows has a more mature tone to it than A Test of Courage did。 The characters, old and new alike, are challenged and grow in many different ways。 It was another great addition to The High Republic。 。。。more

A little underwhelming compared to the other books in the high republic series! It felt like a lot was happening but also not a lot really happened either。 Overall still really enjoyed the setting and I’m looking forward to future entries!

The High Republic era continues to capture my imagination, and it was thrilling to follow as this next chapter unfolded。 This plot struck a nice balance between advancing the larger plot of this era of books, but also focusing on specific characters and their growth。 I continue to be fascinated by Vernestra Rwoh, Reath Silas, and this younger generation of Jedi, especially when they ponder bigger questions about the Galaxy and the role of the Jedi within it。 I also love that this generation of a The High Republic era continues to capture my imagination, and it was thrilling to follow as this next chapter unfolded。 This plot struck a nice balance between advancing the larger plot of this era of books, but also focusing on specific characters and their growth。 I continue to be fascinated by Vernestra Rwoh, Reath Silas, and this younger generation of Jedi, especially when they ponder bigger questions about the Galaxy and the role of the Jedi within it。 I also love that this generation of authors is developing more diverse stories, including queer main characters。 Something I also enjoyed from a nerd standpoint were the descriptions of and discussions around hyperspace travel and the families who were “prospectors” of hyperspace lanes/the scientists who continue to study it。 。。。more

This is more of a 4。5 but hear me out。For a long time Claudia Gray has been my favorite Star Wars author, and she has excellent work to show for it。 But Justina Ireland is coming so, so, so, so close。 This book was excellent。 The characters were written seamlessly from both A Test of Courage and Into the Dark。 While I liked Claudia’s YA High Republic book quite a bit, I LOVED this one。 I’m excited for Fallen Star, Claudia’s next HR book, but I cannot wait to read more by Justina Ireland!

4 starsJustina Ireland delivers the stronger of the two YA High Republic releases thus far。 Out of the Shadows is set in the fallout of Republic Fair massacre and showcases a plot brimming with intrigue as well as solid characters。With a character-driven plot, Ireland gave her cast a healthy amount of attention and development。 Many of them stood out and played off of each other well。 I was especially pleased with the development Vernestra Rwoh and Sylvestri Yarrow。The author managed to fill me 4 starsJustina Ireland delivers the stronger of the two YA High Republic releases thus far。 Out of the Shadows is set in the fallout of Republic Fair massacre and showcases a plot brimming with intrigue as well as solid characters。With a character-driven plot, Ireland gave her cast a healthy amount of attention and development。 Many of them stood out and played off of each other well。 I was especially pleased with the development Vernestra Rwoh and Sylvestri Yarrow。The author managed to fill me in on Vernestra's background despite not having read her first major appearance, and following her through the struggles of being a young Jedi Knight made her all the more relatable and likable。 Additionally, the dynamic between a teenage Knight and a Padawan only few years her junior was intriguing to see and I hope we get to see a lot more of the two in future titles。With Sylvestri Yarrow, I got to see the fallout through the eyes of a regular person。 Her arc is full of emotional twists from her Nihil encounters through to her fraught relationships and Ireland deftly accented her reactions and growth through it all。The plot of Out of the Shadows was a slow burn, but it contained enough high-stakes intrigue to keep me interested。 The events turned out to be surprisingly consequential for the High Republic series as a whole and I'm curious to know what implications they had for the Nihil-Republic debacle。 I really do appreciate that we get to see the Jedi Order struggle to grapple with how to deal with a foe so unconventional yet so insidious。 。。。more

I really wanted to love this book。 In theory I should。 There are great moments and really excellent characters。 Vernestra and Syl make for a great pair of protagonists。 The author writes teenagers very well。 I did enjoy the book, to be sure, but there were two issues that kept me from loving it。 Wordiness, firstly。 It's a bit hypocritical for me to say it, but there were numerous passages--sentences, mostly--that could've been cut down while achieving the same effect。 This happens just often eno I really wanted to love this book。 In theory I should。 There are great moments and really excellent characters。 Vernestra and Syl make for a great pair of protagonists。 The author writes teenagers very well。 I did enjoy the book, to be sure, but there were two issues that kept me from loving it。 Wordiness, firstly。 It's a bit hypocritical for me to say it, but there were numerous passages--sentences, mostly--that could've been cut down while achieving the same effect。 This happens just often enough to be distracting。 The second issue for me was the under-utilization of the protagonist of the previous book in series, Into the Dark。 Reath is in this, but only just。 We get a couple of chapters from his perspective very early on, and he is a major side character in the latter third of the book, but he doesn't do anything。 He's supposed to be extremely cunning by the end of Into the Dark, but in Out of the Shadows he spends most of his time either crushing on or being jealous of Vernestra or otherwise being unhelpful/dead weight in a crisis。 This wouldn't be much of a problem if we hadn't already seen Reath at his best。 I suspect that Justina Ireland was asked to include Reath in this book, but didn't quite know what to do with him。 I still give the book four stars, just because Syl and Vernestra are engaging enough that the previously stated issues are easily forgiven。 Vernestra is the one who really stands out to me。 Her issues, while not especially relatable, make her extremely sympathetic。 She's the youngest Jedi Knight in history, graduating from her trials at sixteen, and she's excelled enough that she thinks she's capable of doing anything that any other Knight of her station can do。 She doesn't understand that experience often matters just as much as raw talent。 She's taken on a padawan even though she isn't ready, and seeing her so completely out of her depth--and the turmoil this causes her--is extremely engaging。 All things considered, she probably wasn't ready for knighthood。Syl meanwhile is a human disaster and I love her for it。 She is a whirlwind of poor choices, awful emotional control, hubris, and utterly terrible luck。 She's one of the most engaging teenaged characters I've read in recent memory。 。。。more

This was the worst star wars book I've read yet。 It read like a poorly written LGBTQ Romance with a bit if plot mixed in。 Not my thing。 I don't read Star Wars for angsty romance。 I read it for a break from romance novels。 I'm confused by all the romantic interest inuendos as well。 Jedi giving side eye looks to each other。 I feel like I'm reading a completely different world than the Star Wars universe from the movies and novels from that time。 Syl, who is the main character, who is not a Jedi, c This was the worst star wars book I've read yet。 It read like a poorly written LGBTQ Romance with a bit if plot mixed in。 Not my thing。 I don't read Star Wars for angsty romance。 I read it for a break from romance novels。 I'm confused by all the romantic interest inuendos as well。 Jedi giving side eye looks to each other。 I feel like I'm reading a completely different world than the Star Wars universe from the movies and novels from that time。 Syl, who is the main character, who is not a Jedi, creeps on and checks out every female she sees。 It was uncomfortable。 If a guy did the same we'd call him a creeper or perv。 It was so not Star Wars。 I'd say skip it BUT。。。 the plot that occurs in the last 1/4 of the book actually progresses the overall story。 I want to know what is going on with Vern。 I do like her character and her padawan's。 Their force powers are unique。It's pretty much a poorly written romance prior to that last part though。 。。。more

I’m glad to have read this book as it is another chapter in the High Republic era。 But the overall story moves at a snails pace through 80 percent of the book。 The book spends a majority of the length setting up the story while leaving any and all development to the characters (which is fine)。 By the time anything actually happens the book is nearly over。

Out of the Shadows is another great installment in the High Republic storyline。 The book is full of complex characters all growing within their own purposes and paths。 I was happy to catch up with Vernestra, Imri, Reath and Master Cormac following out their mission that turned sour after Sylvestri finds out her mother may be working with the Nihil and is on the same outbound flight as the others。 It turns into a showdown that you won’t want to miss! The first book with these characters ("Test of Courage") was a really basic stranded characters story and, despite the insistence of a unified vision from the writers' room, was in itself stranded and sequestered from the rest of the High Republic books。 I expected much the same from "Out of the Shadows", especially given Ireland's previous books in the Star Wars canon (the aforementioned "Test of Courage" along with "Spark of Resistance" and "Lando's Luck") made no ripples through canon whatsoe The first book with these characters ("Test of Courage") was a really basic stranded characters story and, despite the insistence of a unified vision from the writers' room, was in itself stranded and sequestered from the rest of the High Republic books。 I expected much the same from "Out of the Shadows", especially given Ireland's previous books in the Star Wars canon (the aforementioned "Test of Courage" along with "Spark of Resistance" and "Lando's Luck") made no ripples through canon whatsoever。Imagine my surprise when they actually took some chances in this book and allowed the events of it, including the removal of an important Nihil asset, to have potentially huge impact on the future stories。It's still a YA story and has those elements。 Every teenager in is has amplified emotions that have to be overtly stated, but they are valid feelings more often than not and they aren't relegated to the kids' table。 Their decisions actually have weight。I'm still in a state of shock over this book and I think I'm going to have to go back to it before the next High Republic book comes out。 。。。more
